Description

When: Mon, Sept 11, 2023

Autonomy within aviation is advancing towards fully autonomous operations that will alter the traditional design and operation of new and modified vehicles, the roles and responsibilities of their human operators, and the ways they safely operate in a new and expanded airspace. This workshop will tackle and investigate the pressing challenges facing autonomy, what stands in major opposition to progress, and what technology, standards/regulation, and industry practices are needed to pave a successful roadmap to autonomous flight.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand how new forms of navigation (ie. non-GPS based) will be used in autonomous operations, and what is required to meet existing safety/performance criteria.
  • Understand the impact of autonomy on traditional human roles and responsibilities in aviation as those roles change and new roles emerge.
  • Explore the line between Contingencies and Emergencies, what those procedures will look like in an autonomous operation, and how they should be applied.
  • Identify pressing, near-term challenges and the consensus solutions needed in policy/regulation, technology, and market maturity.

Focus Area & Skill Level

The growth of autonomy in aviation and how it effects vehicles, human operators, the airspace, and safety.

Skill Level: Intermediate / Advanced
